Matt Chan Bar

An American-made barbell
custom designed by Rogue Athlete Matt Chan. As a former
firefighter and four-time Top 10 finisher at the CrossFit Games, Matt is a man whose opinions tend to carry weight around here.
That’s why we invited him to come to Columbus and help us
create a custom barbell that would combine the qualities of a powerlifting bar, and Olympic weightlifting bar.

The Matt Chan Bar is manufactured from the same quality U.S.
steel as our Ohio Bar, with both powerlifting and Olympic
lifting knurl marks. Matt added a passive center knurl to the bar. This knurling assists
athletes who prefer a little extra “stick” when in
the front rack position or back squatting, but it won’t
shred the skin like more aggressive center knurls
 might.

Matt has also increased the distance between the outer
knurling which allows for a wider
stance on cleans and deadlifts without the knurling scraping the
shins.

You can order your own custom Matt Chan Bar in Black Zinc for which Rogue has provided some helpful tips for long-term
barbell care and maintenance.

Specifications:

  • Machined and Assembled in Columbus, OH, USA
  • Lifetime Guarantee Against Bending*
  • Diameter: 28.5mm
  • Dual Knurl Marks for O-Lifts and Power Lifts
  • “Passive” Center Knurl
  • Outer Knurling slightly more aggressive for easier hold during high rep barbell work
  • Available in Murdered Out (Black Zinc with Black Zinc Sleeves)

The recommended maintenance is to use a plastic bristle brush and mild detergent to clean the knurl. Next, wipe the bar down with 3-in-1 oil. Finish by removing any excess oil with a dry towel.

*Warranty against bending does not cover any bar which has been damaged due to negligent or faulty use, alteration, maintenance, storage or handling by the user. Negligent or faulty use includes abusive dropping of the bar (i.e., dropping the bar on a box, bench, spotter arms or pins in a power rack, excessive dropping with insufficient or damaged bumpers, or excessive dropping with iron plates, and similar usage). Any specific issues regarding a Rogue product with which a customer is not satisfied will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. We have found that most problems with bars we replace are related to abusive use rather than manufacturing or materials issues.

F Scale™
The F Scale™ is a durability scale for barbells based on functional testing at stresses similar to what barbells experience when being dropped from overhead. Bars that have been treated with Rogue Work Hardening (RWH™) are designated by having an R in their F Rating™. For more information on F Scale™ click here.

Oxidation Rate
The resistance of a barbell to oxidation depends on the type of steel and the coating. Barbells at the lower end of the spectrum will require more care and maintenance to preserve their appearance than barbells at the upper end of the spectrum.

Rogue Chan Bar is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not what I hoped Based on the stellar reviews I was so excited for this bar. After using for many months I can say it's just OK for me. In fact, I prefer the Beater Bar for power lifts over this. I was on the fence between the Rogue 2.0 and this bar and I wish I went for the 2.0. The knurl spacing doesn't work for deadlifts as it's too wide a grip. My opinion, the center knurl is almost non existent for squats. I've used the 2.0 at the local gym and the spin, knurl etc. is much better. I'll continue to use this for Oly lifts, which I don't do often, and probably go for the Ohio Power bar next. I just think this bar tries to be too much for too many activities.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from As a hybrid it really gives a mixed feeling. Based on so many positive reviews I decided to try this bar. So far I really like the knurling pattern as it really is quite comfortable yet firm. (The middle knurling is barely noticeable.) The knurling spacing though is quite awkward if you like to have a close grip on dead lifts or over head presses. I find 2 fingers always hanging off onto the smooth bar during my lifts. Overall, it's well constructed but I wouldn't use this bar exclusively in my personal gym. I will definitely keep it for my Olympic lifts but it will have to sit out for power lifting . As with most hybrid inventions it is average at everything and great at nothing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money I have used other Rogue bars, and this is my favorite one. The knurl is excellent, and the passive center knurl is a feature that once I used, can not have without. I was worried that the knurl would be too wide for me on the dead lifts, but with the excellent knurl, the index finger width wider than what I am normally used to was not an issue. Go with the chrome! Looks amazing, excellent quality, feels great on the hands, and should be pretty low maintenance. It is pretty quiet too when dropped, being used to cheaper, louder rattles on Oly bars. Just holding the bar makes me pretty happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite bar I have purchase the closeout bar (original Rogue bar), the Rogue Bar, Rogue Bar 2.0 and the Rouge Olympic training bar. The Chan bar was instantly my favorite. The knurling is aggressive but does not bite, so in other words, its PERFECT. Passive knurling in the middle is genius and works just like its supposed to with our tearing you up. The Chrome bar does not have the shine of a more expensive Eleiko bar but it's still beautiful. I spent the extra to get the chrome bar hoping to get a bare bar feel...Check! I would give the Chan Bar a 6 star review if you had that option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Purchase from Rouge I've had this bar for a month and I've had opportunity to use it quite a bit. This is my first Rouge barbell. I've only ever used gym equipment from big box gyms. My biggest like about the bar is the knurl. It doesn't chew your hands up yet I've never felt like my grip was slipping. Even during heavy deadlifts and rows, it feels perfect. I'm 5' 10" but I still appreciate the wider spacing between the center and outer knurls. No worries on shredding your thighs or shins on deadlifts. The center knurl is a plus on high bar squats because it "sticks" in place with ripping your neck. Worth every penny.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Black Zinc Sleeves will Fade I put up a review of the Chan bar, but I think it was taken down. I want to caution everyone about the black zinc version of this bar (as I've only owned this bar in black). The loading and unloading of plates will tear the coating off. My sleeves look faded and shows the bare steel underneath. Bar still performs great, but aesthetically it is not holding up. I wish the satin chrome was in stock so I could have gotten that one instead. I've only had this bar for a month now. It's strictly used on the platform with HG bumpers, and occasionally Rogue colored training bumpers. I will never buy a black coated bar again. As for the Chan bar though, I would definitely purchase it again. Nice feel, great knurl, good spin, good whip. Highly recommend it (in satin chrome). Hope this was helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Killer Bar!! I received this bar as a gift about a year ago and all I can say is its a home run. I’m 6’2 and the knurling is perfect for my set up, the whip is just enough it get to going but not too much. I also love the center knurl when I do back squat just for some extra grip. I will say I pull conventional so my shins fit perfect between the knurl unlike the Ohio bar. The only down side of this bar is the black sleeves wear off fairly easy but who really buys a bar for it to look good?....hahaha. I would also recommend you buy some type of collars if you are going to do Olympic lifts because the original OG collars tend to more around on the sleeves. Great job Matt Chan and Rogue, highly recommend!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from beautiful bar This bar was my 2nd Rogue bar purchase, the first being the Rogue Bar 2.0. This bar is exactly as everyone below describes, the knurl isn't as aggressive as you think, but perfect for your lifts, the middle knurl definitely helps with cleans, front squats, back squats. The only issue I have is the sleeve having its coating rub off, which is to be expected. The bar is still beautiful though and performs well all around. Definitely a must own
