MobilityWOD Supernova 2.0

The MobilityWOD Supernova 2.0 is a robust new redesign of one of the most popular recovery products Rogue offers. Like the original Supernova, Version 2.0 offers an alternative to traditional foam rollers and massage balls, with an improved nylon frame construction, grip-strong TPE tread, and an innovative, fully updated groove pattern for deep tissue therapy. MobilityWOD founder Kelly Starrett, who co-developed this 120mm diameter ball as well as the mini 80mm version (available here), explains what sets the Supernova product apart:

“Let’s get a couple of things straight. First, it took us almost 18 months to figure out how to make this thing it’s so complicated. No wonder everyone was just making little balls with spikes. The Supernova is the first of its kind, revolutionary. Your tissues are probably like wet grilled cheese sandwiches. Putting an Ice-pick into that mess won’t change anything. You have to shear those layers apart. Look, we didn't invent the shear concept or grilled cheese, we just made it better. This thing is a one-way ticket to legitsville.

Second: We should have probably just called it the “Super” because this thing really is really super. Like really super. We too have grown tired of roto-tilling and steamrolling our hard working tissues. We needed a device that would allow us to create higher global shear pressures so that when we rolled, it actually made us better. So we made one.

Oh, and another thing. We work with actual athletes. Have you seen the quads and glutes of someone that actually squats? Look, you regularly ride those ponies hard and put them away wet. You are also probably an adult with a job and don't have a million extra hours to spend “recovering” and “getting more awesome”. You need tools that are effective, and fast. And did I mention portable? Have you ever gone through security with a foam tube. You'd get flagged as a risk. Because obviously foam tubes are for children. You're a CEO for crying out loud. Isn't it time you started respecting your hamstrings?

If this ball had a motto it’d be ‘More shear, more better, more awesome.’”

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 2.0 good, but 1.0 was better in some ways I've been using the supernova 1.0 since it came out, and loved it. There were some durability issues, but overall it was a great product. As a previous reviewer noted, the 2.0 model is a bit lighter, and the grooves are not as deep. I have to agree - I liked the deeper grooves with the 1.0, I feel like it gripped/sheared better. I liked the extra heft of the original as well. So yeah, still an awesome product - if you don't have experience with either the 1.0 or 2.0 definitely pick one up, but I'm already looking forward to a more grippy/meaty/heavier 3.0

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More durable, but groves not as deep as 1.0 I have been using the supernova 1.0 for over a year now and just got this one in the mail. Here are the differences: (1) The new 2.0 has redesigned the grooves so that it can be constructed without seams. Presumably this was done so that there is now zero possibility for the ball to break at the seams. (2) The new 2.0 is much lighter and depending on your preference you might like that. I actually liked the heft to the 1.0 better. And (3) the grooves on the 1.0 were much deeper and felt like it got into the tissue better. I would like to see Rogue redesign this model to just make the grooves as deep as the first generation! Overall, great redesign to improve on the durability, but took a step back by making the grooves more shallow. I hope this gets addressed because the supernova is definitely THE favorite mobility tool of mine!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great mwod tool My wife thinks I'm nuts but in the past 3 months I've order the Supernova, Gemini and the Little Battlestar. All of the tools are simply fantastic and I've found each tool better at specific areas. The Supernova is very well constructed and delivers as advertised by delivering more shear and more force than other tools. I have found it perfect for tight anterior shoulders from too much pressing over the years. Other tools were either too small (lacrosse ball) or too large (rollers) but the Supernova is the perfect size. It's also great for the lower lats and glutes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tremendous item Not replicable by foam rollers or lacrosse balls. This thing will hit your psoas/hip flexors and hip external rotaters like none other. If you apply some simple contract/release movements it will break apart fascial layers. Great product, highly recommend for all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Built ford tough! Used to be a lacrosse + wall = relief guy and then I swapped over to this. Right off the batt I could tell it was trudging through the knots in my shoulders and neck. Unfortunately though it also massaged a hole into the drywall. So now I gotta find a way to get that goofy neck angle without my walls looking like an angsty teen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough I really like this ball and the 80mm version but... I really need a 7" version for my hammies. Please make one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! A runner & a crossfitter, I got this to help work through mobility and muscle tightness issues that come with the territory. Arrived yesterday, and I used it on my shoulders, glutes, hammies and even my feet. Results were amazing. The best mobility investment I've made to date. I'll be using this on a daily basis.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Miracle Worker This ball isn't a miracle worker. I am fairly young at 24 so so I can't say I have too many aches and pains but using this ball after a workout or at night before bedtime is the bees knees. The ridges help to get at the deeper muscles a smooth ball or a roller can't properly tackle. The feeling I get is euphoria!! His ball is very hard however so it may take a couple uses to get used to it. My advice is lay in bed and roll on top of it on your mattress. That makes it softer and more comfortable to use but still feels firm enough to do its job. Well worth the money.
